One of the first items ticked off my bucket list! I’m sure I’m not the only one with snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef on their Bucket List. I snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef whilst attending my cousins wedding in Cairns. My Dad and I took a Quicksilver boat to Argincourt Court reef, on the outer edges of the reef, near the continental shelf. The company moors up at a great big pontoon, and provided all the snorkel gear, as well as lunch and beers!
We saw lots of beautiful coral, and a huge napoleon maori wrasse. A very friendly fish, that you can touch, hug and swim with – although we should never touch anything when in the ocean! Not very good habits practiced here.
Although it was a lovely experience, I wouldn’t go with Quicksilver again. They were overpriced and crowded. The snorkel area was quite small as well. Whenever I did a bit of free diving I ended up outside the zone. There are so many snorkeling experiences that leave from Port Douglas or Cairns – I’m sure there would be a better one! Do your research and check out some Trip Advisor reviews.
Has anyone had any amazing experiences snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef? I’d love to hear about them.
UPDATE: 10 years later I have had a lot of experience on the Great Barrier Reef! Check out the best one here!
