Julian Rocks is located off the coast of Byron Bay, on the northern coast of New South Wales Australia. Byron Bay is a popular spot for backpackers, yogis, surfers… anyone looking for a trendy coastal holiday location. It’s definitely a must-stop spot on an east coast Australia road trip. Scuba diving Julian Rocks is a must-do for anyone interested in rays, sharks and turtles!!
Julian Rocks is a short 5 min boat ride off the coast of Byron Bay. We used Sundive – a great operation in Byron who also replaced the batteries in our dive watches! The scuba diving cost $280 for a double dive, all gear included. A dive briefing at the shop, a 2 min car ride to the boat ramp, and off we launch.
Water temperature was around 20 degrees celsius in the middle of summer. Too cold for this lady! Not much of a current but a bit of swell. Scuba diving Julian Rocks is a pretty easy dive, with very interesting topography.
We saw plenty of wild life; grey nurse sharks, lots of rays and moray eels… even an elusive manta ray. The place was absolutely chock-a-block with wobbegong sharks.
The maximum depth was around 25m, so you will need to be an advanced level diver to scuba Julian Rocks.
Of all the dives I’ve done in Australia, Julian Rocks was definitely one I’d recommend adding to dive itinerary. If you like the wildlife of Julian Rocks, you’ll absolutely love Stradbroke Island, which is only a couple hour drive away from Byron.
