The Best of Fremantle Markets

In my last 2 years in Perth I’ve come to know Fremantle Markets quite intimately. I live a 5 min drive away and am fortunate enough to have half day work day on Friday, so I can usually head down there and beat the big crowds.  Here are some of my favourite parts of Fremantle Markets!

The external facade is lovely. The Victorian building has been around since its completion in 1897. That itself is worth the visit.

Inside you’ll find two jam packed halls filled with market stalls, tourists and just a general market mess. To say it is “bustling” is an understatement. Come with your patience – the market is open from Thursday through Sunday (and Monday public holidays) and I’ve never seen it without ONE MILLION people within it (no exaggeration…). There is always a busker to be found, and if there are no buskers or street performers, there is always a brave punter, tinkling on the marketplace piano.

A young busker, bustin the tunes.
Brenna (Matt’s cousin) showing off her skills
Street Performer just outside the market entrance so does the exact same show every Sunday.

There’s also some talented individuals either selling their art, or creating it right in front of your eyes.

Henna tattooing
Stunned Emu Designs
Darren Button Didgeridoos and Drums
SmartArts Canvas Paintings & Picture Framing

Do you consider flowers art? Because when I see these, I do!

And the shopping… There is a particular vibe in Freo – a very hippy, Byron Bay feeling.

The Vintage Delhi (my favourite)

There so many shops and stalls that sometimes it’s hard to see the quality stuff through the tourist crap, but I guarantee you; it’s there.

Puca Candles – flavours like Strawberry & Champagne, and Sugar Cookie… mmmmm
Your usual fun trinkets

But lets be clear. The reason you’ll see me at the market is the FOOD.

Otis Espresso
Rolled Ice Cream
The Herb+Spice+Tea Shop
Gourmet Popcorn – a crowd favourite
Chimek
Coffee Connection – with flavours like Tiramisu or Sambucca
Turkish Cafe – serving delicious baked goods and Turkish tea
DNK Cupcakes
Fresh fruit and vegetables from a huge variety of sellers
Muffles! A cross between a muffin and a waffle.
Mousetrap – the best cheese shop in Perth.
Roogenic – a popular tea spot

This is just the tip of the iceberg – some of my fav stalls within the market. And I don’t even have a photo of Levi’s Doughnuts, which is Matt’s favourite spot. He makes them fresh on the spot. So warm and delicious. When ever Matt and I have visitors, we always make sure that Fremantle Markets is on the to-do list. There is a bit of a high turn over at the Markets, so even if you’ve been before, it’s always worth another visit. I am a sucker for a good market though.

What about you? Have you been to Fremantle Markets? Did you like it? Do you have a favourite stall? Do you love markets as much as me?
