Exploring Europe – Aix-en-Provence

We arrive by plane late in the afternoon and caught a taxi to our hotel, the Hotel du Globe. We decided to get a quick bite to eat, and then have an early night.

Our first full day day in Aix-en-Provence was spent exploring the city. We used the map provided by the hotel to find all the sites and attractions. First stop: the markets of course! We stocked up on fruit to get us through the morning.

We meandered through the markets, and then walked to the local church – the Cathedrale Saint – Sauveur.

We stopped for lunch and consulted the map again before getting back on our feet for more exploring.

We had a great day looking around, but there isn’t actually much going on in Aix-en-Provence except beautiful buildings and great food. It would be an awesome place to rent an AirBnB and live for a while. Did I mention how good the food was?

We tried our hand at some carpaccio. Matt had salmon and I had beef. It was so delicious.

Afterwards the whole town showed up in the main square, all the local businesses pulled out their tables, chairs and tv’s, and we all sat down together to cheer on France in the FIFA World Cup. Soccer (or du foot) is serious business over here… and we don’t mind one bit!

On our second day we picked up our hire car to explore the Provence region. Yep, I’m still nervous about driving on the wrong side of the road.

We took the road north and passed some amazing lavender and sunflower farms.

We made a pit stop in the small town of Lourmarin to have a look around and grab a snack. The buildings were just so beautiful and the small shops sold some lovely things.

We kept on driving until we hit Luberone, where we stopped for lunch.

After that pit stop it was onto our final destination: Gordes. Of course we stopped along the way to take photos of all the pretty things.

When we finally hit the outskirts of Gordes, it was like a fairy tale city.

We drove in and parked for a look around. The views were just amazing.

After an hour of walking through the small village we jumped back into the car and drove back to Aix-en-Provence, back to the hotel and stowed the car away for tomorrows adventures.

We went out to dinner for one last go at the local cuisine. Matt had duck and I put my brave face on and ordered steak tartare, complete with raw egg yolk. And do you know what? It wasn’t that bad. I would order it again.

The next day we were hitting the road again, on wards to our next destination!
