The very first thing Matt and I did after arriving at our hotel is get ready to go find the Trevi Fountain. We love staying at Accor Hotels when we can – we’re members in their points club, and we end up getting great rewards. Our hotel was just outside the city limits, so with the help of the friendly front desk attendants, we were on our way.
The Trevi is a huge, majestic, beautiful fountain, tucked away among people’s homes. I couldn’t believe that it could be basically someone’s backyard. There were people hanging their washing from their windows and little herb gardens hanging from sills.
After wandering around the main city, seeing the sites and having some dinner, we found a little riverside market with little sideshow games and food. Of course Matt was into the lollies, but we also tried some strength and dexterity tests. It was great fun!
The next day we spent the morning checking out the Colosseum and Roman Forum. We took the metro straight to the Colosseum with the plan to wing it. Coming out of the station was amazing… the Colosseum was the first thing you saw. The sheer size of the monuments were astounding, and I could hardly believe that they were built so long ago. Matt bartered for a tour with a guide outside the Colosseum, of course, and we got a discount price for both the Colosseum and Roman Forum. It was great to hear about the history of the monuments and standing in the very places where history took place.
It was soooo hot that a lady on the tour feinted onto the hard stone Colosseum floor. Poor thing. Her knees immediately bruised up.
After lunch I surprised Matt with a Gladiator lesson. Totally nerdy, but hilarious to watch. Matt had a good time too. I found the gladiator lesson on Viator. It was a little pricey, but I’m glad I did it.
